"Safety is our concern and your right"
Policy statement
The Bishops Waltham Carnival Committee and the Race Organiser will do their
utmost to ensure that all possible precautions are taken to ensure that you can
enjoy the event with the maximum of fun and the minimum of risk.
We have listed below the actions we have taken or plan to take to ensure the
safety of participants and spectators alike.
Route
The routes of the Road Race and Fun Run will take you along roads frequented
by normal traffic. To ensure your safety, we have, as in previous years, applied
for temporary road closure orders for critical sections. These road closure
orders will be indicated by 'Road Closed' signs, and cones where appropriate and
will be managed and enforced by the local police.
All road junctions will be manned by race marshals who will also be supported
by police at key points on the route.
The race will be led by a police vehicle which will initiate the 'rolling'
road closure and warn marshals of the imminent approach of the lead runners.
Most marshals will be equipped with mobile phones and be instructed on emergency
procedures.
Medical services
First aid cover will be supplied by the St. John's Ambulance brigade who will
be in attendance near the start and finish points at the fire station.
The main race will be followed by the senior marshal who will be responsible
for alerting the emergency services of any incidents.
All marshals will be instructed on
emergency procedures and also most will be equipped with mobile phones.
Refreshments
Regular runners will be fully aware of the importance of fluid balance and
need no reminders here of the importance of taking on plenty of water - particularly
if it is a hot day. The novices amongst you are urged to seek advice from more
experienced runners.
There will in any case be liquids freely available at the start and finish of
the race. An intermediate watering point will also be set up at approximately
the half way point, shortly after reaching the top of the long hill climb.
Your responsibility
Remember that your safety is also dependent upon you acting responsibly.
Please ensure that you obey all the instructions which may be given to you by
race officials or the police. Keep a sharp eye out for the possibility of a
motorist who either does not see, or chooses to ignore the barriers and road
closed signs.
Make sure you are physically fit enough to run the course - you should be
able to complete it in not more than 50-60 minutes. Ensure that you wear
suitable footwear and appropriate clothing for the conditions.
